Here are a couple of quick examples of the power of the word.

Tool 23 – Should, ought, must

These three words can create stress, so it is worth noticing how often you use them.

How often do you say – I:

  • should ….
  • ought to….
  • must…..
Activity:
  • Use your journal to make a list of all the things you think you ‘must do should do or ought’ do.
  • Be aware of how often you use these statements throughout the day!

Tool 24 – I could, I choose

If the words ought, should and must are replaced with the word COULD it offers choice, you are taking responsibility for all your decisions and actions. If you choose to do something or choose not to do something you are acting from a more powerful place and are accepting of the consequences.

Activity:
  • Experiment with using the word COULD instead of the should, ought, must words.
  • Look back at the should, ought, must list in your journal and rewrite your list replacing the words should, ought and must with ‘could’.
  • Notice how it feels and if it changes how you experience things and how it impacts your stress levels.

Tool 25 – Accentuate the positive.

During times of stress and worry the mind can have a habit of just seeing the darkness. The words and thoughts inside the head and the words spoken may reflect darkness and have a negative feel; this can be changed.
